Katherine Glatter

Katherine Elsa Glatter, loving wife and mother, passed away on Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at the age of 55. She died quietly at home surrounded by her family after a five-year battle with multiple myeloma, a rare type of blood cancer.She is survived by her husband, Paul Ita, two daughters, Violet Elsa Ita and Annie Rose Ita, as well as her mother, Christa, and brother, Dan. She was predeceased by her father, Andrew, in 1985. Katherine was born in Detroit, Michigan on July 15, 1963 and graduated from Silvania Southview High School in Toledo, Ohio in 1981. She graduated from Kent State University with an BA in English in 1985.She married Paul on June 1, 1991, and together they raised two daughters, Violet and Annie. They lived in Kent, Ohio for nine years, where Katherine worked as a licensed massage therapist, and moved to Amherst, Massachusetts in 2000 so that Katherine could attend the Alexander Technique School of New England to study the Alexander Technique, graduating in 2003.Katherine was a published poet as well as an active writer, blogger, and reader. She had a great passion for singing, and was an active member of the Western Mass Sacred Harp Community, which hosts a weekly sing of shape note hymns at Smith College. She felt a deep connection to all types of American spiritual and gospel music, and for many years attended an annual singing workshop with Ysaye Barnwell at the Rowe Center.She was a fierce advocate for social justice and was always generous in her contributions to everyone from non-profits to people on the street. She never passed a street musician without putting a few bucks in the hat, even more if they were enthusiastic or knew any Motown. She loved yoga, hiking, swimming, biking, and anything outdoorsy (though she drew the line at camping).
